Liebster Blog Award

Oh hey, sometimes I forget that anyone out there's reading. So imagine my shock when Meggs tagged me for a Liebster Blog Award -- like, weeks ago. I'm a bum who took forever to post the damn thing, but this is exciting. First, I've got all these fellow tagged bloggers to check out + who doesn't love answering questions about themselves? Seriously.

The Rules:
1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you, PLUS create 11 questions for the people you tag.
3. Tag 11 other bloggers with less than 200 followers, go to their page and let them know you've tagged them.
4. No tag backs.

11 Facts About Me:
1. I've been a skier for as long as I can remember.
2. By the time I was 2 years old, I knew all the words to Bob Marley's Legend album.
3. I once drove solo NY to CO, and back to NY, couchsurfing and Walmart-parking-lot-sleeping along the way.
4. Sixteen of my eighteen years of schooling occured in Catholic schools.
5. "I believe in god, only I spell it nature," and u-n-i-v-e-r-s-e.
6. Stuck somewhere between hippie, skibum, & hayseed.
7. Heritage: Irish, Lithuanian, German, French, Scottish, English.
8. My nails are always painted; turquoise is my go-to color.
9. Um, well I'm not really sure how to put this.. but uh, yea.. four twenty.
10. I have one boob implant. (Result of a freak breast assymetry remedied when I was 20.)
11. I adore the tiny house movement and would love to build a little Fencl of my own.

11 Questions from Meggs of Live Well and Breathe:
1. What's your favourite book?

I'm a huge Beat era nerd, so Minor Characters by Joyce Johnson (one of Jack Kerouac's early girlfriends) comes to mind immediately. Well, it might not be my favorite of all time, but I loved it. During a rough patch a few years ago, it was exactly what I needed to read, and spoke so many of the words I wanted to say. I haven't revisited it since, but I'm sure I will! Here's one of my favorite quotes from the book: "But has it become my own madness not to have outgrown those years when the door first swung open on a world I never managed to explore as completely as I longed to?"

2. What's your favourite way to relax?

This is a toss up between two pretty different things. #1 is lying near the water with a book. (I'll take a lake over the ocean, but either is lovely.) Oh and if a hammock's available, even better. #2 includes a sunny day, country radio, my car, my camera, and wide open rural roads. I love to explore.

3. What's your best advice?

If it's not helping, it's hindering. This relates to a cluttered junk drawer, a stale relationship, unneccessary fears.. anything really.

4. What's one thing about yourself you like?

I like my independence. I take pride in the things I've done all by myself. Mostly, my solitude is a result of being interested in things no one else cares to do, which is totally ok with me. I don't expect even the best of my friends to get excited about the prospect of driving for 2000 miles, or waking up at the ass-crack of dawn to spend the day throwing themselves down a mountain. I was ostracized as a kid, and live in an area where my interests are -- I don't know... not the norm? So doing my own thing started early and stuck with me. I almost never go anywhere (by car) as someone else's passenger, either. I like to the be in charge of myself (though I take on as many passengers as Connie'll allow). I always have my own vehicle, and I hate to drive in convoy.

5. What's the last thing you did that you think back to fondly?

I don't even have to think that far back. All of my ski days this year (only 5 so far) are super fond memories. Also, I'm fond of the ice cream I made from scratch on last week! Ice cream's my favorite... it's a problem, really.

6. What's one thing you're determined to learn?

Hooping skills. I wrote about receiving my hoop as a gift back in August, and haven't made a ton of progress since. But I will, really! When the snow thaws and nights are not so nippy, I'll be back in the park working it out.

7. What's the thing you're best at making?

This is the last question I answered because it took forever to figure out what it is -- 'cause I'm fairly skilled at a whole bunch of things. But I guess if I'm being real, what sets me apart from others based on my ability is braids. I'm really good at "making" braids in my own hair. [see instagram for a few examples] I do inside out french, one-sided, fishtails, 4-strand, waterfalls, all the fun stuff. I'm not that good at giving them to other people, though.

8. What's your favourite place to be?

Away from the city.

9. What's something big you're planning to do this year?

Well, it's not THAT big, but I want to go pond skimming at the end of the ski season. If you don't know what that is, youtube it. It's absolutely ridiculous, and I've been wanting to do it for years -- especially in some sort of costume, yet to be determined. Also, this.

10. What's the first thing you do when you wake up?

I don't have much of a routine. I guess after making my way to the bathroom I usually beeline for a cup of coffee (in cooler weather), or morning smoothie (when it's warm) and open up my laptop.

11. What's the last dream you had that you remember?

Isn't this terrible? I barely remember my dreams, like at all. I don't know what it is... I know I used to, they just haven't been as vivid in recent years. Usually I'll only remember one person who was "there," though not much of what went on. Most recently my dart friend Jay was in a dream, but I couldn't tell you why! So vague..

4. What would you consider your most peaceful time of day?
5. Where do you fall in the birth order of your family (only child, first born, etc.)?
6. Do you have a favorite TV show?
7. What's one of the most adventurous things you've done in the past year?
8. If funds were not an issue, and you found yourself at the airport tonight, a week's vacation ahead of you -- where would you fly?
9. Do you have any favorite names?
10. What's your general "uniform" of dress?
11. What do you want to be when you grow up?

If any of you tagged ladies end up participating drop me a comment with the link! I'd love to see your answers.

28 BEFORE 28

Ok people, here it is -- my list of 28 things to do before my 28th birthday.

To be honest, the past year feels like barely anything happened, but I should probably give myself a little more credit... I moved in with E, decorated the apartment, adopted a
beautiful cat, solo roadtripped to Nashville, and started this blog, among a few more easily forgettable things. Now it's just time to get back on my game, get working, and make sure I schedule time for all of these:

1. Start hooping

2. Buy a tambourine & rock it
3. Walk across the Hudson
4. Go pond skimming in costume
5. Pull the sewing machine out & use it
6. Create a wall hanging
7. Save $4000 towards a vintage Argosy >>> this goal has changed, I'd rather build a tiny house.
8. Get a job (very important for saving $$$)
9. Add an unnatural color to my hair
10. Get a new tattoo, or 2
11. Blog for each of Amanda's 101 List
12. Hike a summit
13. Get to a yoga class
14. Touch my toes, it's been years
15. Go topless at a beach
16. Bike a cumulative 100 miles
17. Take pictures of mom & dad
18. Design new business cards
19. Make a photo-an-hour post, monthly
20. Ski at least 10 times
21. Take newborn photos
22. Read 10 autobiography/memoirs
23. Meet a blog friend in real life
24. Revamp the shop
25. Visit the Grand Canyon
26. Unplug for a week
27. Go to a music festival
28. Climb a tree

Bonus: Photograph all these goals and blog about them, obviously.

Can't wait to see what kind of excitement's in store!
Do you have a goal list before your next birthday, or for the year?
Or have any of the same things on your own list?

2009 answers have been struckthrough.

Unless they haven't changed.

1. Exlain your relationship status:
single
[will have been living with the Ej for a year soon, in a relationship for 16 months (this week). my longest ever, actually]

2. Name a lyric from the last song you listened to:
she loves you yea yea yea
[so lets get to the point, let's roll another joint]

3. What time did you get up this morning?
8:30
[10:03. i've got to move my bedside table and start setting my alarm so i can get up early and greet the day with some stretching and  a walk before the man even gets up for work. no more sleeping in after he leaves! i miss mornings]

4. What did you wear today?
right now i'm in sweats, will be in black head to toe in about half an hour
[well, soccer shorts and a bra tank so far. but i probably won't jazz it up much to leave the house in an hour, either]

5. Do you wear contact lenses or glasses?
nope
[this is still true! i've got great vision and i feel so lucky to have it. especially because i've got a ton of almost-legally-blind folks around me]

6. How many windows are open on your computer?
3
[5. rockmelt, aim (haha yea, i still use this, but primarly because i always close my gmail tab mid-gchat), picasa, picture folder of things for the blog, and notepad (which i consider one of the greatest, most under utilized programs in windows)]

7. What are you doing after this?
showering, going to work
[heading up to my mom & dad's to do some laundry (we have a machine downstairs, but it's small and costs $2+ every load), dump some clutter in their basement, and sit on the porch in this spectacular weather to edit pictures (i'm backlogged since mid-april)]

8. Where did you get the shirt you are wearing?
northeastern greek leadership association conference
[it's just a long light blue bra tank from h&m]

Where I Come From: Anniversary Edition

Today my parents have been married for 35 years! Aren't they cute? I just love them, so much.
A huge Happy Anniversary to Jeannie and Mark!

You're the absolute best and I couldn't have asked for a better couple raise me, spoil me, learn from, talk to, drink and laugh with. They're two of my best friends in the world and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Keep up the good work, you two :)

2006 answers have been struckthrough.

Unless they haven't changed.

1. A is for age:
21
[26, only a few months from 27, eek!]

2. B is for beer of choice:
coors light
[this is still true, although i try to drink as little beer as possible for the sake of my waist]

3. C is for career right now?
i don't have a career. i have a job. and i coach afterschool sports programs at grammar schools.
[i don't have a job for that matter right now either. i got laid off in december '11 and have been just hanging out on unemployment since. i'm just not sure what it is i'm supposed to be doing with my life. and not sure if i'm supposed to be doing it here or elsewhere. had an interview yesterday though, so fingers crossed on that.]

4. D is for your dog's name:
tara oona mcgiver (rip 1987)
patch (rip 2006)
[no new dog to report on. tara was an irish setter, and patch a border collie/spring spaniel. i'm pretty dead set on a golden retriever for the next one (they smile!), but if not i'll probably go the border route. i guess it all depends on what the shelter's got. however, that'll have to wait until i've got some more space for a pup.]

5. E is for essential item you use everyday
cell phone
[a lighter. while i still use my cell phone essentially every day, i could do without to be honest. i'm not sure if it's the LG ally i've been rocking for almost 2 years that i can barely stand, or what, but ugh, cell phones bother me. especially because most people don't have the etiquette to ignore them in social situations.]

6. F is for favorite TV show at the moment:
grey's anatomy
[haha, really? i don't ever remember being super into grey's... i guess i was struck by the mcdreamy train. anyway, now my favorite show has got to be zooey deschanel's New Girl. it's so cute and hysterical.]

7. G is for favorite game:
FMK (aka: fuck, marry, kill)
[scrabble/words with friends]

8. H is for Hometown:
white plains
[yes, i'm still from there]

Lazy Afternoon Self Portrait Session

First of all, my apologies for being a bum the past week and barely posting. It's been so beautiful out that I've actually been taking advantage of my current unemployed status and enjoying the weather. Go figure.

Today I had every intention of editing photos from the past week or two.
Then I decided to do a little personal photo shoot instead.

It felt really good to just do something just for me. It's been ages since I've taken a picture of myself.

Given that doing something for myself included not cleaning the apartment, the bedroom was my best bet for uncluttered shots (not to mention including my favorite of Ej's paintings, and the best curtains ever).

I kept the curtains drawn so the neighbors couldn't see in.
'Cause sometimes I'm bashful.
Next time I'll utilize the amazing light the room gets.

Aren't they fun?! Personal shoots are amazing for upping your confidence. Let me tell you.

I can't wait for the next time.
Maybe a new monthly series?

Tunesday post after darts tonight! If I'm not too tipsy, anyway.

Where I Come From: Paternal Edition

I've always been fascinated by my family history. I'm less knowledgeable about dad's side than mom's, simply because they've all lived 8 hours away my whole life  - and guys seem to keep fewer mementos than ladies. Lucky for me, hanging around my parents' today, I found these gems in dad's computer.

You gotta love authentically vintage photos.
Clockwise from top left:
1. the family before uncle ken was born (dad's in the middle in the front. yes, he was 1 of 7! this picture was the first i ever saw where i noticed the distinct resemblance between he and i) // 2. grandpa john //  3. dad's high school picture // 4. great grandma (grandma's mom, she looks a lot like my grandma did!) // 5. dad in college (at the first bar i ever snuck into) //  6. lithuanian great grandparents (grandpa's parents) //   7. grandma with 5 of my aunts and uncles
I'll be posting my fantastic vintage finds from Jessie's grandparents' old Brooklyn apartment tomorrow.
Keep and eye out for them!

a salty piece of land
["But has it become my own madness not to have outgrown those years when the door first swung open on a world I never managed to explore as completely as I longed to?" - Minor Characters: A Beat Memoir by Joyce Johnson. It's wonderful, especially for a beat geek like myself.]

I attempt to keep these to a minimum.
