Some Things That Happened In May

Overall, the weather was pretty spectacular with the exception of some rain. I put out my hammock at mom & dad's. Got as many snuggles in with Mac cat as possible while he was still a sweet munchkin. Somehow, I finally managed to find my camera's battery charger (clutter rules my life). Then I serendipitously fell into a temp job with a family friend where I got to use a typewriter everyday for a few weeks. There were wild & rowdy patriotic beers on a sailboat, followed by one super serene night at my peaceful place on The Sound.

I took a bunch of drives down my favorite faux-country road to my hometown. We were hit with an insane heat wave, which included a night bartending without functional ac. I wore yellow nails (though never as well as I hope to). Oh, and I got a tattoo of the constellation Orion! Trey decided to sneak into the apartment hallway to cool down on the old tile floor, I fingerweaved a few bracelets with jersey fabric, and spent a quiet weekend alone in my adorable little town.

I'm amazed we're already over a week into June. My birthday is creeping up fast! I'm attending a tiny house fair in Vermont next weekend and can't even begin to explain my excitement. No idea what a tiny house is? Check out my pinterest board for for a peek -- I'll definitely be explaining more before I leave on Friday. Anything you're looking forward to coming up before July?

I Am A Rock, I Am An Island

A glimpse of my Sunday evening: in my peaceful place and my comfy clothes, with my zone-out tunes. I hung out 'til it got dark, contemplated for a while. Then I came home, ate ice cream and watched 4ish documentaries. It was sorta perfect. Awesomely calm.

After working for a sixteen day stretch, this was the perfect way to unwind. The weather finally cleared up and left New York with a gorgeous Sunday and Memorial Day. I hope you had a chance to get outside and enjoy yours!

Mac Attack!

Meet Mac! My parents brought this adorable little orange kitten home about ten days ago. I've visited nearly every day since. I just cannot stay away - he'll only be this perfectly tiny for a little while. And this especially cuddly. He's all purrs, plus a little piss & vinegar. Such a sweetheart.

While dad came to the decision this guy would be called "Mac," because as he explained, "I started thinking of orange things... cheddar, mac n' cheese, etc." My sister and I had really liked the name Hines, after our beloved former Pittsburgh Steeler, Hines Ward (or even "Heinz" for that matter, after the field where he played). So, in my mind, a collaboration ensued.

That brainstorming and more Steel City pride had me decide this handsome ginger kitty will be formally named: Mac N. Cheese Hines Bradshaw.

 Don't you love his face?!

I hope you've had a great week -- I've been wildly, unimaginably busy for the past 10 days, with a menacing 6 laying ahead of me. No complaints though. Busy feels great. Will try and give you a rundown about it all sometime later this week.

Anything new or exciting been going on with you lately? Can you believe June's around the corner?

80 Degrees in April

Today I head a few miles away to Manor Park to lounge on some rocks overlooking the sound. I got a few pages into Women Who Run With The Wolves before I started sweating to death and worrying about getting a sunburn.
"Once women have lost her and then found her again, they will contend to keep her for good. Once they have regained her, they will fight and fight hard to keep her, for with her their creative lives blossom; their relationships gain meaning and depth and health; their cycles of sexuality, creativity, work, and play are reestablished; they are no longer marks for the predations of others; they are entitled equally under the laws of nature to grow and thrive. Now their end-of-the-day fatigue comes from satisfying work and endeavors, not from being shut up in too small a mindset, job, or relationship. They know instinctively when things must die and when things must live; they know how to walk away, they know how to stay." - Clarissa Pinkola Estés

I also made a few totem animal connections today. I'll look into their messages and share what I find soon.
Were you lucky to experience any unseasonably warm weather today?

The View From My Kitchen Window

Just threw together these snowy little .gifs from a few snaps out the window. The snow's really coming down, and I'm praying for as much as mother nature's willing to dump! I've got to get skiing soon. It's been over a year, and last season was abysmally snowless. I only got out to ride once, hmph. Fingers crossed for inches in the mountains!

"...it is a special gift of the relationship between earth and sky. It only comes in sufficient amounts in particular places, at certain times on this earth; it lasts only a limited amount of time before sun and wind changes it. People devote their whole lives to it for the pleasure of being so purely played by gravity and snow." - Dolores LaChapelle

In other news -- I've finally managed to make some progress with my blog layout -- after holding off forever because blogger was being a little shit. I reset the template and essentially started all over again. But with the new tablet E gave me for Christmas, it's been more fun than ever to mess around. I plan to be back on the ball with everything very very soon!

I've crossed my line in the sand. A year's up.
2013's going to be special. It has to be.

Custom Vintage Inspired Party Invitations

Aren't these birthday invitations the cutest? Yes, I'm completely biased 'cause I designed them -- anddd the little boy is my uncle, many moons ago. But I really love how they turned out. Can you believe the pictures were taken in the late 40's!? I had the best time pulling them together for my aunt.

I used MOO postcards for the printing. I loved the quality, full bleed, heavy stock, glossiness (but worth noting: only one side of the postcards have a shiny coating). They also sell brown paper envelopes, which went with the invitations perfectly. They're good. Recommended.

I'm not exactly sure where this past week went -- The surprise party was last Saturday, which is where I started what would equal 17 hours of standing. On my feet. Seriously, like, worse than a waitressing double shift, because after the party was a night of bartending. But no real complaints :) The party and the bar crowd were wonderful -- and I managed to get a few hours sleep before my best friend came over with her fiance for their save the date/holiday card photos early the next morning. After that was a baby shower -- I showed up to nearly empty handed (save one Lithuanian baltic amber teething necklace). I was absolutely mortified. Long story short -- never ever forget you can't shop in New Jersey on Sundays. I'm a silly New Yorker and I forget such things.

So I used the rest of the week to recover from all that, celebrate Mom's birthday, Christmas shop, and a whole buncha other stuff. The holidays are upon us, and my buddy Sean's here for his birthday weekend. It's time for me to get back to the boys -- I hope you're having a great weekend so far and stockpiling energy for the next 10 days of holiday crazy.

XO: Peace, love, and prayers to Newtown.

Zombie Halloween

I knew Halloween was going to come and go without much fanfare this year. Most parties took place on Saturday while I was at a fabulous wedding, so I put no thought into a costume. Hurricane Sandy came and all hell broke loose in New York. When she passed, we were left thankfullyluckilyblessedly unscathed but somewhat apartment bound for a few days. Late Wednesday night I coaxed E into some pictures with me. It's amazing what difference some concealer and dark eye shadow can make. I lit a few candles for the mood & our post-Sandy-low-key-Halloween-kitty-eating-zombie photoshoot ensued.

It's been very weird around here since the storm. I've been personally unaffected, and the same goes for my parents a few miles away. E's been home from work all week because the power's out at his office in the city. I'm not sure how we got off so lucky. So many others have been so horrifically devastated. I'm glad to have a bunch of clothes to donate (it's been a purging week or two around here). I can't stop watching the news or checking updates to see what's going on. However, if I read another facebook status from someone complaining about their lack of electricity or gas I might just scream. Be thankful for a roof, assholes.

In other news: I'm still working hard on the rebrand project.. chug chug chugging along...

Tunesday!

Hey! Happy Tuesday. I'm in the afternoon throes of reorganizing the spice cabinet and the closet, and maybe another closet. Eh, probably just the one. But I've been working so hard on a new project this week that I've been big time absent over here. Sooo, I thought I'd share one of my "happy" songs with you on this crisp, clear, blue bird fall day.

That's My Morning Jacket. I love them, and saw them live for the first time at Bonnaroo in 2008. In the rain. With rad 3d-esque fireworks glasses. On... something or other. While Zach Galifianakis pranced around the stage in Orphan Annie's dress. I shit you not - it was magic.

Last week I bought tickets to see them for the second time at a newly restored theater 15 minutes away from here. It was originally opened in 1926. Then Janis, Clapton, and the Grateful Dead played there in the 70's. So much history. Oh! Aaand I'm going my two very best guyfriends in the world (who were with me at 'roo08), and E. So yea, that's happening. The show's 3 months away, but I'm clearly stoked.

The project of late has me staring at tumblr dashboard more than usual. It seems a good thing, however, 'cause when I landed on my personal page a few minutes ago, the collection made me smile. Why not head over and take a peek yourself?!

I'll be back with a sneak peak into my organization later or tomorrow. Dart league starts back up next week, and tonight we're meeting up with the team for some practice and beers at our home bar. I hope I can find the darts E got me before the first league night. I hate that they've gone missing...

See why I need all the organizing?

Phone Dump!

I don't have an iphone. I don't even have a decent android, to be honest. It's over 2 years old, has a cracked screen, and the camera's pretty terrible. But, every once in a while, when I'm out and about, and happen to have my phone on me (I'll leave without it whenever possible) I end up catching something cool.

These are the first, and oldest shots I finally removed from my cell this week. Expect some more soon.
1. a foggy morning at the lake     2. flooded train tracks after irene
3. view from my (former) park avenue office     4. mourning dove hanging out by the apt
5. queens bound at sunset     6. where i read my books

7. the george washington bridge at twilight     8. adorable lil purple flowers in the yard

I've been working on a website for my mom's adorable friend who's completely computer illiterate lately, along with adjusting to returning from work at nearly 5am on Sunday mornings. I know I'm only bartending only one night a week, but I find myself dragging ass a bit more than usual. Aging's such a shame..

Also, I recently updated my about page and finally placed a few blog sponsorships out there (with Laura and Gentri). So I'm curious, I've been at this a while, but what don't you know about me? Any questions? This chick's an open book.

In New York, It's Impossible to Forget

I've lived within thirty miles of midtown Manhattan my whole life. Sometimes, I inadvertently have the New York arrogance that we live at the center of the world. I forget that what happens here, doesn't always affect the rest of the country or the world in the same personal & all-encompassing way it does for those of us who consider the city our backyard.

via

I in no way mean to suggest that September 11, 2001 did not impact our entire country. Of course it did. I know that everyone who watched or listened to live reports, or those who awoke to a world turned upside down remembers where they were, what they were doing, or who they were with on that infamous day. What I remember still runs chills up my arms.

I got to school, through first period, and onto second before everything changed. During homeroom announcements, prayers and intentions, we were asked to pray for those affected by the accident at the World Trade Center. I mildly recall girls whose parents may have worked in the buildings leaving class and heading up to the main hall. Many of us had parents working in all different corners of the city. But we still didn't get what was going on.

When I got to art, our guidance counselor was in the front of the classroom listening to the radio with Ms. P. It wasn't weird that she was there, but the look on her face was ominous. By then, we knew planes hit the towers, but we still didn't get the whole "terrorism" thing. We were 16. She explained that nothing would ever be the same, how this was a significant event in the history of the United States, and beyond that - I can't really recall...

We wandered around campus in a somber haze. My most vivid memory from the day is standing outside on what was one of the most unforgettably beautiful days of my life, my face craning towards the clearest blue sky, closing my eyes, and listening to the frantic sirens of every emergency response vehicle in Westchester heading to where everyone'd been running from.

I remember being in the cafeteria when I finally talked to mom. My dad worked five miles north of the World Trade Center, and should have been fine - but you couldn't call anyone in the city. All circuits were busy. She said, "Daddy's ok." It was all I needed to hear - but she continued: my aunt was ok, dad's friend was ok, her friend's husband, my uncle, etc. Whoa. We were so lucky.

This wasn't just an attack on America. In New York, it was an attack in our backyard, against our families, friends, neighbors, way of life, and identity. My sister's friends lost their dads. My dance teacher was run out of one of the towers over the shoulder of a firefighter. We'd never let a bag go unclaimed in Grand Central again. It'd be forever difficult to sit in traffic on a bridge or tunnel without a cringe. I wouldn't apply to any colleges in the city. New Yorkers would never feel as safe as we might if we lived anywhere else in the country.

Today is a spectacular sunny blue sky day, just like it was eleven years ago. If you weren't here that day, you probably don't remember that part of the story - but for me, especially on days like this, it's impossible to ever forget.

My Best Friend's Getting Married!

This is my best friend Kim. She's funny, smart, and one of the most down to earth, loving people I've ever known (not to mention, she's super tall like me - which I couldn't love her for more). She's been dating this awesome dude named Jordan for a while now. When someone asks me what he's like, I usually say he reminds me of a midwesterner, in all the best possible ways. He's a laid back, grounded guy - who loves sports, beers, family - and most especially, my Kim.

Ok, well, maybe it's most especially important that Jordan loves both the New York Mets and Giants with a fervor equalled only by Kim's. I mean, they have season tickets, "their spot" where they tailgate before games, and a special K+J game tally in the parking lot. They are so fucking cute.

Last night they went to a game, routine as ever... only it wasn't. 'Cause this happened:

For those of you unfamiliar with Citi Field, these bricks cover the sidewalks outside of the stadium, they'll be there forever.

Can you tell she was surprised?! I'm so glad Jordan hired a photographer to capture these moments, the pictures make me feel like I was right there with them. I mean, that reaction is classic Kim - and I've never seen my girl so happy.

Don't you just love the way they look at each other? Sigh.

I couldn't be happier for her, nor can I wait for the monster celebration that will be their wedding. All of this went down just hours after I made a positive affirmation and found some peace within myself yesterday. I can't help but be reminded that good begets good. Happy things for happy people, always. The universe was smiling on me and my partner in crime, and September 7, 2012 will forever go down as a wonderful day.
