Tunesday Adrift

I hope everyone's doing well after Thanksgiving and the thrill of all the Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday madness! In case you're interested in gifting some art this season - I'm running a HUGE SALE in my photography shop through the holiday season - 50% off some prints. You should check it out.

The snowy pine pictured above was the view from my living room window about an hour ago. Mother Nature was kind enough to brighten up an otherwise dreary morning with a big fat snow for a few hours. If you saw my last post, you know I've been dying for woodland views lately. So yea, I'll take all I can get.

In honor of the day - I've put together a snowday-cuddle-up-fireplace-sleepy playlist for your relaxation during this wild time of year, with some of my very favorite chilled out tunes tunes. Hope you enjoy ☺

Adrift ▲ tracklist:
Sleep - Azure Ray
Aqueous Transmission - Incubus
This Years Love - David Gray
Helplessly Hoping - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Across the Universe - Fiona Apple
Sparks - Coldplay

Just Give Me One Thing That I Can Hold Onto

This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and specifically this version. I know the audio is low, but just turn up your speakers and listen real hard. If you've seen Into the Wild you know Kristen Stewart's version -- but trust me, this one's fantastic.

Bonnie Raitt - Angel from Montgomery (live in Chicago, December 1974) :: LYRICS

So far as a playlist in the similar style, I've got to give it up to "Music for the Bohemian Collective" from theflowerchild (of The Flowerchild Dwelling) that she put together for the new site, The Bohemian Collective. It's a project started by the ever inspirational Laura of Violet Bella, to link up similar bloggers and shop owners with some of the prettiest stuff you've ever seen. Definitely check it out, and listen to this while you do!

Covers You'll Love

Alex Cornell covering Adele's "Someone Like You" -- [LYRICS]

I gotta start out by saying that I'm a HUGE Adele fan. Really, you can't even get me started on her, because I'll rave for hours. Sometimes I don't even have words, just satisfied grunts -- she's too good. The soul! How does she write all those lyrics?! Love Adele.

I also watch enough sing competition tv to know that covering Adele isn't generally a great idea. She's too current, too good. However, I really like the way Alex Cornell makes it his own and puts a little testosterone into the song. He'll never be diva, but I'm a sucker for an acoustic cover.

Alex's cover came into my sphere of awareness via the following 8tracks playlist. I previously posted an amazing Sweet Disposition cover which is also included in the mix. I've been listening non-stop:

What have you been listening to latey? What must I hear?

I've Seen All Good People Turn Their Heads Each Day

Just a quick post before I finish up dinner and head out to an Eric Hutchinson show.

Feeling very classic rock today (nothing new there). It's Q104's Two'fer Tuesday, so I got two Zep, two Janis, Floyd, some Elton, Jefferson Airplane, and a ton more on my way to Jessie's in Brooklyn. We had a chilled out afternoon in her amazingly huge old apartment (it used to be her grandparents'). There was Saved By The Bell, photography, and sushi. Red clam. Oh my god.

I came home and found this amazing playlist on 8tracks.
Seriously, it's fantastic, you should listen:

this one made me smile particularly hard first. it just got better from there.

Wordless Wonders

Do yourself a favor and take a 10 minute breather after pushing play.
Just close your eyes and chill out.

Instrumentals are some of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I'm always down for amazing lyrics, but sometimes you just don't need them. Especially when you've got beauties like this:

The Song That Lindsey Likes

I sorta kinda couldn't have decided to start this whole blog thing with a better Tunesday Tuesday than March 20th.
This story might be a little long, apologies in advance...
Well, first off, here's the jam:

Dave Matthews Band - The Song That Jane Likes
(LYRICS, these are important)

linds & i before jr prom. an all-time favorite.
In high school, my best friend Lindsey (born March 20, 1985) once told me, in that "I- have-no-idea-why-really-can't-give-you-a-good-reason" way, that this song made her think of me. It wasn't one that we listened to any more than the others in our early Dave Matthews and folky rock repertoire, but for some reason the opening of the song made me pop into her head. I took it; just never gave it much thought.

In May 2005, Lindsey was murdered while we were in a stupid fight and hadn't spoken in months.

Now, I've never been one for flaunting my tattoos online. This is for a couple of reasons, one of which is maintaining my originality. I cringe every time I see another birds flying from feather tattoo. Don't get me wrong, I understand that some people aren't as tied to each of their tattoos having deep meaning as I am. I digress...

I knew I'd memorialize her on my skin, and immediately went and got a tiny star tattooed on my foot. Not only had we discussed matching tiny star tattoos years earlier, but I'd even carved one into her ankle with a thumbtack in an adolescent attempt at scarification which would quickly fade (to go with the heart I cut into my foot, duh). But the star wasn't enough for me.

see the tiny sand-covered star on my right foot? near my pinkie toe? it's there, i swear.

I needed more Linds-ness, and it took me a while to figure out how exactly to get it. Until I listened to this song, for the god knows, thousandth or so time. The lyrics finally hit me. "WHILE YOU AROUND HERE PLAY, warm on the wild and far away." Now if anyone was ever playful and wild, it was Lindsey.

I went so far as to piece together bits of her handwriting from an old card:

But ended up going with tattooey (new word I just made up, love it?) script instead:

I've since added even more to the tattoo -- but for the sake of (at long last) brevity, and in keeping with the Tunesday theme, that's quite enough. The Song That Jane Likes inspired one of my tattoos, and reminds me to live like Lindsey.

Here are a few more that do the same:

Happy 27th Birthday Dear Angel.
